This October, six Wounaan participated in the annual Audubon Hawkwatch at the top of Ancon Hill.
Three women and three men, from four birdwatching groups - Oropendolas Negras and Tangaras Azules of Puerto Lara, Los Pelicanos Pardos of Rio Hondo and Los Carpinteros Alineados of Rio Platanares - spent four days identifying and counting up to 17 different raptors on the wing in their annual migration. An excellent bird identification and monitoring training, they also meet and work with professional guides who are managing the count, and volunteering themselves. Stay tuned for more results of the Wounaan Bird Count: next count, January 5, 2024, Puerto Lara.
